The European Parliament has officially passed the most comprehensive set of regulations for artificial intelligence in the world, known as the "AI Act." The legislation introduces a risk-based approach, banning certain AI applications that are deemed to pose an "unacceptable risk" to citizens' rights, such as real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces. The act also mandates that high-risk AI systems must undergo strict assessments for transparency and accuracy before being deployed.

The new laws have sparked a divided reaction within the global tech industry. While many privacy advocates have hailed the move as a victory for human rights, several major tech firms warn that excessive regulation could stifle innovation and put Europe at a disadvantage compared to the U.S. and China. Violators of the act could face massive fines of up to 7% of their global annual turnover, making compliance a top priority for developers.

The implementation of the AI Act is expected to happen in phases over the next 24 months to allow companies to adjust to the new standards. It is widely expected that this framework will serve as a global blueprint, much like the GDPR did for data privacy. Governments worldwide are now watching closely to see how the balance between safety and technological progress will play out in the European market.
