The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has officially launched the "DE Rantau 2.0" visa, a specialized pass tailored specifically for high-earning digital nomads and remote workers. This new category allows eligible foreigners to live and work in Malaysia for up to two years, provided they meet a minimum annual income threshold of US$35,000. The government aims to position Malaysia as the premier hub for remote work in Southeast Asia, competing directly with Bali and Thailand.

The updated visa now includes "Nomad Hub" certifications for local co-working spaces and accommodation providers, ensuring that workers have access to high-speed internet and supportive communities. Major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Melaka are being promoted as the primary destinations for this group, with a focus on their affordable cost of living and rich cultural heritage. Officials estimate that this initiative could contribute over RM250 million to the local economy annually through indirect spending.

Local businesses, particularly in the F&B and hospitality sectors, are expected to benefit from the influx of long-term international residents. Critics, however, have voiced concerns about the potential for "gentrification" in popular neighborhoods, which could drive up rental prices for local Malaysians. The Ministry has countered this by stating that the visa is limited in number and specifically targets “high value" individuals who will contribute to the local knowledge economy.
