Matt Shakman, the director currently working on Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, has been tapped by 20th Century Studios to direct a new installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise. This announcement comes on the heels of the successful 2024 release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, confirming that the studio is eager to expand the legendary sci-fi saga. Shakman is expected to begin pre-production on this project immediately after he completes his duties for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The studio has not yet confirmed whether Shakman's film will be a direct sequel to Kingdom or a standalone story within the established timeline. However, insiders suggest that the script is being developed to delve deeper into the burgeoning ape civilizations and their complex relationship with the remnants of humanity. Given Shakman's background in character-driven storytelling, fans are hopeful that this new chapter will maintain the emotional depth seen in the previous trilogy.

This move marks a significant career milestone for Shakman, placing him at the helm of two major Hollywood franchises simultaneously. The Planet of the Apes series remains one of the most consistent performers for Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, both critically and commercially. As casting rumors begin to circulate, the production is reportedly scouting locations that can provide the grand, post-apocalyptic scale the franchise is known for.
