The Selangor State Government, in collaboration with the Landasan Lumayan project, has launched an intensive cleanup operation today to tackle several "plastic choke points" along the Klang River. Following heavy localized rainfall earlier this week, massive amounts of plastic waste and organic debris have accumulated at log booms, threatening to cause flash floods in low-lying urban areas. Specialized watercraft, including the "Interceptor" units, have been deployed to accelerate the extraction of waste before it reaches the sea.

This operation is part of the broader Selangor Maritime Gateway initiative, which aims to revitalize the river's ecosystem and improve water quality for potential future transport and recreational use. Authorities noted that despite significant improvements over the last two years, illegal dumping by small-scale industries and residents remains a persistent challenge. The state is currently reviewing CCTV footage from high-risk areas to identify and prosecute offenders under stricter environmental protection laws recently passed by the state assembly.

Environmental NGOs have welcomed the move but emphasized that long-term success depends on a cultural shift toward a circular economy and better waste management at the source. Residents in the Klang Valley are being encouraged to participate in community-led recycling programs to reduce the volume of single-use plastics entering the drainage system. As the monsoon transition period continues, the state remains on high alert for potential blockages that could lead to sudden water level rises in residential zones.
