Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released on parole today after serving eight months of his one year sentence. The 76 year old billionaire was seen leaving Klong Prem Central Prison in Bangkok early this morning, accompanied by his family, including his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra. His release comes after a court ruled he was eligible for parole, having served a portion of his sentence while under hospital detention.

Thaksin's return to freedom marks a pivotal moment in Thai politics, though his once dominant Pheu Thai Party has seen its influence wane following recent election setbacks. Despite his age and recent legal battles, Thaksin remains a highly influential and controversial figure in the nation’s political landscape. His release is expected to trigger shifts within the current government coalition as factions adjust to his presence outside of bars.

Supporters gathered outside the prison to catch a glimpse of the former leader, who dominated Thai politics for nearly a quarter century before his original exile. Analysts are now closely watching to see what role, if any, Thaksin will play in advising the current administration or shaping the future of his political movement. For many in Thailand, his release signifies the end of a long and turbulent legal chapter for the Shinawatra family.
