The Malaysian government has officially selected three local technology firms Great Asic, SkyeChip, and Oppstar Technology to spearhead a landmark project for home grown semiconductor design. This strategic move is part of the National Semiconductor Strategy aimed at moving the country up the value chain from traditional assembly and testing to high end Integrated Circuit (IC) design. By providing these companies with access to advanced computing platforms, the government hopes to establish Malaysia as a significant player in the global tech ecosystem.
To accelerate this development, the firms will collaborate with Arm, a global leader in semiconductor IP, utilizing their specialized compute subsystems. This partnership is designed to reduce the time it takes for local engineers to develop and manufacture chips for AI, automotive, and telecommunications applications. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that this project is a critical step in ensuring Malaysia’s economic resilience and technological sovereignty in a highly competitive global market.
The project is expected to create high value employment opportunities for local engineers and researchers, stemming the "brain drain" to other countries. Furthermore, it positions Malaysia as a neutral and attractive destination for global tech giants looking to diversify their supply chains amidst ongoing US-China trade tensions. As the project progresses, the focus will remain on building a robust local ecosystem that can sustain innovation and compete at the highest international standards.
