In its latest quarterly index rebalancing, MSCI has announced the removal of six prominent companies from its MSCI Malaysia Index. High profile equities including Axiata Group Bhd, YTL Corporation Bhd, Petronas Dagangan Bhd, and Nestlé Malaysia Bhd are being entirely deleted from the main country gauge. Meanwhile, Mr DIY Group Bhd and QL Resources Bhd have been relegated to the small cap index, a shift expected to trigger portfolio outflows by global fund managers.

Financial analysts predict that the rebalancing could lead to a temporary selling pressure on Bursa Malaysia as passive international funds adjust their asset allocations. The exclusion reflects a shifting landscape in market capitalization and liquidity criteria set by global index providers. Despite the immediate market reaction, local institutional funds are expected to step in to stabilize the affected stock prices.

The changes are scheduled to take effect officially at the close of business on May 29, 2026. Representatives from the affected corporations stated that their long-term business fundamentals remain solid regardless of index classifications. Market observers advise retail investors to focus on intrinsic corporate earnings rather than short term institutional rebalancing trends.
