Hollywood A-lister Matt Damon is officially in talks to star in the upcoming, untitled Universal Pictures event film from the Oscar winning directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, widely known as the Daniels. Damon is stepping in to replace Ryan Gosling, who originally signed onto the high-profile project earlier this spring before abruptly exiting. Industry insiders reveal that Gosling left the production because he requested substantial script changes to expand his role, which would have severely delayed the strict filming schedule required to lock in a massive California tax credit.

The top secret project marks the first feature film from the directing duo since their groundbreaking sci-fi hit Everything Everywhere All at Once swept seven Academy Awards in 2023. Initial plot details have finally come to light, revealing a mind-bending story that reportedly blends global warming, time travel, and a potential superhero narrative angle. The complex script will unfold across two distinct timelines the 1980s and the present day focusing primarily on teenage protagonists.

Damon is set to play the supporting role of a father to one of the central teenagers, and the studio is currently fast tracking the casting process for the young leads. Production is locked to begin in Los Angeles this summer to safeguard the film's funding, and Universal has already scheduled the theatrical release for November 19, 2027. The project extends Damon's incredibly strong relationship with Universal Pictures, following his roles in the Bourne franchise and Christopher Nolan's upcoming blockbuster epic The Odyssey.
