Missing Malaysian Influencer Arrested in Taiwan Over Alleged Investment Scam

KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian influencer, who was previously reported missing while traveling in Taiwan, has been arrested for his involvement in an alleged investment scam.

Taiwan police detained 31-year-old Hu Chang Mun on December 11 in Changhua County. He is accused of acting as a money mule for a fraud syndicate. Hu reportedly assisted in promoting a fake "investment platform with guaranteed profits" on social media, targeting a 40-year-old Taiwanese woman who suffered significant financial losses.

The arrest took place during Hu’s third meeting with the victim, where he was set to collect NT$2 million (RM276,000). Police seized cash, a work phone, and other evidence at the scene.

Hu, who appeared shocked at the time of his arrest, claimed he was unaware of his role in the scam. He said he had traveled to Taiwan on a visa-free programme with promises of earning money while enjoying free accommodation and meals.

Hu has been charged with fraud, money laundering, and violations of banking laws. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
