Enhanced Medical Services for Record-Breaking Thaipusam at Batu Caves

KUALA LUMPUR — The Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves on February 11 are set to attract 1.2 to 1.5 million devotees, with improved medical and emergency services to ensure safety during the large gathering. A Central Control Command unit, coordinated by Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Devasthanam (SMMTD) chairman Tan Sri R. Nadaraja, will oversee emergency responses.

Datuk Dr. A.T. Kumararajah, the Medical and Emergency Coordinator for Thaipusam 2025, highlighted the mobilization of the Selayang Emergency and Trauma Team to provide continuous medical support. Dr. Nabil Muhammad, the Medical Commander, has led this initiative for over a decade, involving eight hospitals and various agencies like KKM, the Malaysian Red Crescent, and the Fire and Rescue Department. In total, 1,500 personnel will be deployed.

New emergency response zones have been created at key spots like the 272 steps to the temple and along the 14-kilometre route of the silver chariot procession. With 24 medical zones established, teams will be able to navigate dense crowds and respond swiftly to critical situations.

On February 9, the silver chariot procession will begin its 15-kilometre journey from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, expected to be accompanied by over 100,000 devotees. Volunteers and authorities will ensure crowd management and a safe pilgrimage route.
