KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the Cabinet to approve the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) to regulate and support the sustainable growth of the gig economy. Zahid, who chairs the high-level committee (HLC) for SEGiM, emphasized that the commission would protect the rights of platform providers, gig workers, and consumers by enforcing transparent policies, monitoring service standards, and promoting self-regulation.

The idea for SEGiM, originally proposed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), was refined during the meeting, with plans to develop its legal framework in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Department. Zahid reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the gig economy, ensuring worker well-being, and fostering a stable digital economy.
