KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's challenge at the Swiss Open ended in disaster in the men's doubles on the opening day, with all three professional pairs suffering early exits.
Top seeds and world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani fell to a shocking defeat against Japan's world No. 76 Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita, losing 25-23, 15-21, 21-11 at St Jakobshalle in Basel on Tuesday.
It was a bitter blow for Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who were hoping to bounce back after their last-16 exit at the All England last week.
Veterans Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi also bowed out despite a valiant effort against world No. 12 Lee Jhe Huei-Yang Po Hsuan of Taiwan.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi saved seven match points and even held one themselves at 22-21 in a dramatic second game but ultimately fell 21-18, 28-26.
The defeat extends a worrying slump for the world No. 33, who have now lost four consecutive first-round matches since reaching the Malaysia Open quarter-finals in January.
Once ranked as high as world No. 6, they were also World Championships bronze medallists in 2021.
Meanwhile, world No. 25 Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong also endured a disappointing outing, losing 23-21, 21-18 to Denmark's world No. 26 Andreas Sondergaard-Jesper Toft.
Azriyn-Wee Kiong have struggled throughout the European swing, failing to win a single match across all four events.
This year, men's doubles representation at the Swiss Open was made up solely of independent players, with no pairs from the BA of Malaysia (BAM) entered
