Indian authorities detain AirAsia passenger from KL for smuggling cannabis worth RM2.6m

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian authorities have detained a passenger on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur for possession of cannabis worth approximately RM2.64 million.

The passenger was arrested upon arrival at Tiruchirappalli International Airport on March 23 after customs officers discovered 5.155kg of hydroponic cannabis hidden in the checked-in luggage.

The Tiruchirappalli Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, in a post on X, said that the seizure was based on specific intelligence gathered by the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) in Trichy.

"Based on specific intelligence, officers from the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU) in Trichy recovered 5.155 kg of hydroponic cannabis, approximately valued at Rs 5.1 crores, concealed in the checked-in luggage of a passenger.

"The passenger arrived at Trichy Airport from Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia flight AK 25 on March 23. The person was arrested. Further investigation is ongoing," it said.
