LONDON — Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma to help his recovery from urgent abdominal surgery, according to reports on Tuesday.
The Nigeria international was rushed to hospital for the operation on Monday, having suffered a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester in the Premier League. There is no suggestion that the 27-year-old’s condition is life-threatening and it is understood the coma will help restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate.Awoniyi collided with a post while trying to score in the closing minutes against Leicester. He received several minutes of treatment before being allowed to return to action.Awoniyi played on despite being in visible discomfort as Forest, chasing Champions League qualification, had used all their substitutes.
The extent of Awoniyi’s injury was discovered on Monday by the club’s medical staff and he was rushed to hospital for the operation.
