Ukrainian refugees in the UK, like 36-year-old Lidiia who fled with her two children in 2022, are living in uncertainty as their special visas near expiration. Despite a recent 18-month visa extension, there is no clear path to permanent residency. Many, including Lidiia, fear returning to war-torn Ukraine and want to stay, especially as their children have integrated into British society. While over 70% of Ukrainian refugees wish to remain, current UK visa policies do not offer long-term resettlement.Charities argue that without legal status, many struggle to find stable jobs or housing. Some are turning to the asylum system as their only option for staying permanently.Calls are growing for the UK to follow the EU’s lead by offering longer extensions and resettlement options, as seen for Afghans and Hong Kongers. Until then, thousands remain stuck in limbo.
