MIAMI — Lionel Messi’s star power is driving a surge in U.S. viewership for the Club World Cup, with Inter Miami matches drawing numbers close to Premier League levels.
English-language broadcasts on TNT Sports averaged 360,000 viewers through Wednesday, just below the Premier League’s 394,000 average on USA Network last season.
Inter Miami featured in three of TNT’s seven most-watched games, including a peak of 676,000 viewers for their 2-2 draw with Palmeiras. Spanish-language viewership was even higher.
Messi's squad advanced to the Round of 16 after a 0-0 draw with Al Ahly, a 2-1 upset over Porto, and the Palmeiras tie—setting up a blockbuster clash with PSG on Sunday in Atlanta.
The match will reunite Messi with his former club and pit him against the new Champions League winners in what’s expected to be a ratings hit.
