Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai to face Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in all-Malaysian showdown as Yap Roy King-Wan Junaidi stun third seeds in Hong Kong

KUALA LUMPUR — Professional mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie will face fellow Malaysians Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in a battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open 2025 today.

Seventh-seed Soon Huat-Shevon bounced back from a game down to pack off Taiwanese pair Lin Bing-Wei-Lin Jhih Yun, 13-21, 23-21, 21-8 in 41 minutes during the opening round of the Super 500 tourney held in Hong Kong Coliseum.

On the other hand, Pang Ron-Su Yin, took 24 minutes to breeze past Ukraine’s Oleksii Titov-Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-14, 21-14 and thus set up their third meeting against husband and wife duo in the second round, with both Malaysian pairs having 1-1 head-to-head record.

In the men’s doubles action, national pair Choong Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri survived a one-hour duel against South Korean pair Kim Gi Jung-Kim Sa Rang, 21-11, 16-21, 21-18.

Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal will next play compatriots, Wan Junaidi Wan Arif-Yap Roy King, who stunned third-seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark, 21-19, 23-21, yesterday.

Meanwhile, professional men’s singles shuttler and world number 43 Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, also booked a spot to the second round after a comeback win over world number 26 Chi Yu Jen of Taiwan, prevailing 15-21, 21-18, 21-15.

However, Aidil faces a stern test next as he will go up against sixth seed Christo Popov of France, who earlier edged Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 19-21, 21-17, 21-19.

In women’s singles, national player K. Letshanaa’s campaign ended in the opening round after going down 22-24, 16-21 to Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang.
