Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that Petronas has transitioned into a net importer of fuel, marking a shift from its traditional status as a net exporter. Speaking at the Perak Madani Rakyat Programme, Anwar explained that this new reality leaves Malaysia more exposed to global energy supply pressures despite being an oil-producing nation. He noted that while supply for April and May is sufficient, the outlook for June remains uncertain due to ongoing geopolitical volatility.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as a response to public perceptions that Malaysia should be immune to oil crises following conflicts in West Asia. He stressed that roughly 40% of Malaysia's imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country vulnerable to any disruptions in that vital maritime corridor. Anwar urged all parties to understand these "current realities" and cooperate on solutions to maintain national energy stability.

In a related move to manage consumption, the government has announced that employees will begin working from home on April 15 to help reduce fuel usage across the country. The administration is also focusing on recovering leaked revenue—estimated at RM15.5 billion—to help sustain existing subsidies for the people during this global energy crisis. Efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with nations like Iran have already helped release stranded Malaysian vessels in the Hormuz Strait.
