Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) owner, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ), has sparked a major conversation about the future of Malaysian football. Speaking at a Malaysia Football League (MFL) roundtable yesterday, the Regent of Johor called for a "radical reset" of the domestic league structure to prioritize inclusivity and fan engagement.

TMJ identified four core issues hindering domestic progress: a lack of structured grassroots development, the need for a more competitive youth system, the implementation of an independent professional refereeing body, and improving officiating integrity. He warned that current academies are producing "robots" lacking the creativity and resilience needed for international success.

The call for reform comes as JDT continues its dominance on the field, most recently securing a 2-1 win over Melaka FC in the Super League with goals from Ager Aketxe and Marcos Guilherme. His bold vision for an "open model" has put pressure on stakeholders to move beyond incremental changes to revive the national game.
