Tengku Zafrul Aziz has been unanimously elected as the new president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

On March 25, it was reported that there had been a consensus among a majority of BAM’s council members for the investment, trade and industry minister to serve as the president for the 2025-2029 term.

At the time, BAM acting president V Subramaniam was reported to have said that they want a boss who is well-known as a corporate figure, and a minister, “with a lot of experience”.

Tengku Zafrul later said he accepted the chance to helm BAM and had been given the green light from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Tengku Zafrul came close to being appointed as BAM president after Norza Zakaria had initially planned to step down from the post early last year.

However, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh intervened and asked Norza to reconsider and remain in office until after the 2024 Paris Olympics in August.

BAM subsequently decided to appoint Subramaniam as acting president until today’s AGM
