Penang will launch a new track-and-trace system for durians on June 1, in collaboration with MIMOS Sdn Bhd. This system, featuring fruit tags, aims to combat fraud and ensure the authenticity of Penang durians, which have been misrepresented by sellers from other states or with imported produce. The platform will provide real-time tracking of origin, certification, and status, ensuring quality assurance and transparency for consumers. While Penang exported slightly less durian in 2023 due to hot weather and high domestic demand, demand for Malaysian durians remains strong, particularly from China and Singapore, with Musang King and Black Thorn being top varieties. The state continues to develop new cultivars like Kim Long and Cenderawasih.
