The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living has arrested an ice lorry driver for illegally stockpiling subsidised diesel at a premises in Kangar, Perlis. Enforcement officers raided the location following a week of close surveillance on the suspect's highly suspicious refueling patterns at local petrol stations. During the operation, authorities discovered a large hidden storage tank inside the lorry that was modified specifically to hoard fuel beyond legal limits.
Enforcement teams seized a total of 1,200 litres of diesel alongside the modified commercial vehicle, with the entire haul valued at approximately 45,000 ringgit. Initial investigations revealed that the driver was abusing the cheaper subsidised fuel rates intended for local businesses to build an illegal stock. The syndicate planned to smuggle and resell the hoarded diesel to industrial sectors or across the border for a much higher profit margin.
The suspect is currently being detained for further interrogation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, which carries heavy financial penalties and potential jail time for individuals convicted of hoarding controlled goods. Government officials have reiterated their commitment to intensifying daily checks at border entry points and petrol stations to curb fuel smuggling. The public is urged to immediately report any illegal fuel hoarding activities to the ministry's enforcement hotline.
